10 Coastal Home Decorating Ideas for Each Room

Coastal Living Room, Kitchen, and Dining Room

Create the perfect retreat on the seashore. Welcome to my shopping guide for modern beach house decor and an action plan with tips to get you started on creating the perfect retreat.

What is the difference between beachy and coastal décor?

Coastal design tends to be more tailored, traditional, and refined, whereas a beachy look feels more like walking around in your jeans barefoot. A coastal space often makes use of clean lines and definition of shape in furnishings, whereas beachy homes are more laid back, put your feet up on the coffee table feel.

How to Create a Coastal Living Room, Dining Room, and Kitchen

If you're looking to create a coastal retreat in your home, you're in luck! Coastal design is all about creating a relaxed and inviting space that feels like you're right by the sea. Here are a few tips to get you started:

Take a cue from this charming Nantucket home that was featured in New England Home magazine. I am feeling very inspired to add some of this charm to my home this summer.  Interior Designer Nancy Serafini is a frequent contributor to New England Home magazine, but this time she shares the warm and inviting family home that she and her husband lovingly updated for their family gatherings during the summers in Nantucket, MA. Such a delight, so much love.

The article was produced and written by Stacy Kunstel and photographed by Michael Partenio.

Enhance your home with these sea-themed colors- crisp whites and soft furnishings.

I’ve curated a suggested shopping list below. As you shop and choose items, your space will become uniquely your own, and the process will be focused on your likes and dislikes as you proceed.  Try to stay close to the theme and don’t waiver - there are lots of shiny objects out there!

LIVING ROOM:

Start with a color palette. When it comes to coastal design, the colors you choose are essential. You'll want to use a mix of cool, casual colors like sea glass green, sunny coral, weathered blue, ocean turquoise, and pure white.

Edit your existing pieces. Before you start adding new things to your space, take a look at what you already have. What pieces do you love? What pieces could use a refresh? Once you've edited your existing pieces, you can start layering in new ones.

  • Sofa: A white sofa is a classic choice for a coastal living room. You could also choose a sofa in a light blue or green color.

  • Chairs: Pair your sofa with a few accent chairs in different colors and styles. Wicker chairs are a great option for a coastal living room.

  • Rug: A natural-fiber rug will add a touch of warmth and texture to your living room. A sisal rug is a good choice.

  • Coffee table: A coffee table made from driftwood or reclaimed wood is a great way to add a coastal touch to your living room.

  • Pillows: A few throw pillows in different colors and patterns will help to define the style of your living room. Seashell-print pillows are a great option.

  • Art: Coastal art is a great way to bring the outdoors in. Choose art that features seashells, waves, or other coastal scenes.

  • Accessorize with coastal touches. No coastal home is complete without a few coastal touches. This could include things like nautical rope, seashells, or driftwood.

  • Don't forget the details. The details are what will really make your coastal space feel special. This could include things like window treatments, lighting, and furniture hardware.

  • Table: A white dining table is a classic choice for a coastal dining room. You could also choose a table in a light blue or green color.

  • Chairs: Pair your dining table with a few wooden chairs in different colors and styles. Wicker chairs are a great option for a coastal dining room.

  • Rug: A natural-fiber rug will add a touch of warmth and texture to your dining room. A sisal rug is a good choice.

  • Light fixtures: Choose light fixtures that have a nautical or coastal feel. Nautical rope chandeliers are a great option.

  • Draperies: White or sheer draperies will let in plenty of natural light and help to create a relaxed atmosphere.

  • Accessories: A few coastal accessories, such as seashells, driftwood, or nautical maps, will help to complete the look of your dining room.

KITCHEN:

Shop some of our selections to create a coastal lakeside or beach look for your home. Keep it light, not too fussy and easy to clean.

  • Cabinets: White cabinets are a classic choice for a coastal kitchen. You could also choose cabinets in a light blue or green color.

  • Countertops: Natural-stone countertops, such as marble or granite, are a great way to add a touch of luxury to your kitchen.

  • Backsplash: A blue or green backsplash will add a touch of color to your kitchen. A seashell-tile backsplash is a great option.

  • Appliances: Stainless steel appliances are a great choice for a coastal kitchen. They will look sleek and modern against the white cabinets.

  • Accessories: A few coastal accessories, such as seashells, driftwood, or nautical maps, will help to complete the look of your kitchen.

I hope this helps!
