Great design will impact you daily, and when it’s right you will know. Just like meeting someone and having that feeling that you like them While design is personal, its commonality is those meaningful adjustments in both scale, style, and flow.

Great design is for everyone, and you don’t have to spend a fortune to get the support you need from a designer through an e-design Consultation.

When I walk into your house, what does it tell me about you and your story?

This is a 2-Hr. Virtual Design Consult

I just completed an Ask Me Anything E-Design Consultation via Email last month, and I am excited to share a snapshot of how it works.

You’ve tried to create the perfect room, yet it just looks blah! What to do? Consider an E-Design Consult or a 2hr Virtual consult. Take a look, I’ve recently completed a few of these Quick Ask Me Anything E-Design Consultations and I thought I would share a few with you.

E-Design Consult Example

For E-Design, my clients answer a questionnaire that is sent to them and I respond via email with suggestions to their design inquiry.

On this inquiry, the homeowner was struggling with her Den / TV Room and wanted some input on how to make it cozy and inviting. Many times people are seeking input on questions that they are struggling with and just need a little guidance to help resolve. Many of these questions are aligned with what an interior designer is trained to know and once the principles are shared, the solution is suddenly attainable.

Here are the before pics of her Den.

My response to the Q AND A CONSULTATION that I sent with my Sketch: How to Design Around a fireplace

Online E-Design

Thank you for your interest in our design suggestions for creating a  home that makes you happy. Let's dive in:

You sent me images of your TV room / Den and are looking for suggestions on how to create a warm inviting room.  Here are my top 9 thoughts on changes that would help make this room feel warm and inviting.

Mood Board/ Concept Board

Here are my top 9 talking points that will transform this room from drab to fabulous while designing around a fireplace.

  1. Focal Point:

A room needs one focal point.  You have two, the fireplace and the TV are competing for attention and are using a lot of space. For a room that only has 3 walls, you have really limited yourself here having the TV and Fireplace competing.

2. Suggested Layout.

I suggest you move the TV to above the fireplace and create just one focal point in the room.  You can mount it on the wall above FP, or build a mantel for it to rest on that is at least 12” deep to protect the TV from the heat of the Fireplace.  Typically a 42 “ tv should be at least 52” from the floor to the center of the screen, but that is not a hard rule today. Since this location above the fireplace is a little above ideal, you can angle the tv to create a better image quality.

If you have a cable box place in on the shelf of one of the side tables  Now you can arrange the furniture with this one focus in the room and use that valuable wall space previously occupied by the TV for seating.

3. Carpet Size.

Your furniture needs to sit on the carpet. I suggest you rotate this carpet so you can fill the room in width.

See my post here for more information on “How to Choose The Right Carpet”  A larger carpet will make a small room feel bigger.

4. Change Furniture Placement.

Try not to push the furniture out to the walls.  Bring all pieces into the room for a conversation setup and to create and more intimate conversation setting. This is an important design principle that is often overlooked and often designers first talking point for placing furniture in a room. Especially if you have a large room. For your space, make sure there is some space between the window wall and sofa. You also need a coffee table to complete the setting. Maybe in natural wood or upholstered if you need additional seating. In many homes, people love to lay down and watch tv, so I’ve added another sofa to the layout.

5. Add Drapery.

Some pretty drapery would make a big difference.  These do not have to be custom.  There are some great ready-made curtains that you can consider.

Drapery will soften and finish the room, in addition to improving acoustics, and reducing any cold drafts from the windows in wintertime.

GREAT ONLINE SOURCES FOR DRAPERY

Pottery Barn: I really like the texture and quality of the Belgium flax linen drapes, and they are always having a sale.

Anthropology: Lots of options. I do like the playful character of the Sadie curtains and I am a big fan of the lucite hardware too! Very sexy.

Etsy: There are so many custom drapery stores to be found on Etsy. It’s definitely worth a little digging for good cost-saving + super quick options.  This shop has great fabrics: Lynn Chalk.

Wayfair: A home decor mall on the internet with lots of options and price points. Again, I tend to lean toward the linen. Here are a few of my faves: Bulah Floral | Silas Linen Panels | Pine Con Hill Panels | Adora Linen Sheer

6. Coordinating Pillows and a Throw, or Two

Like these pillows from Etsy.   I’m constantly amazed at the products I find on Etsy, especially pillows and accessories, at great prices. Plus you are supporting small businesses.

Click here to visit this Etsy Shop for pillows for a wonderful surprise and options like these and these.

7. Art: Gallery or large colorful Art is important for a finished room

This room needs some Art: Minted is my go-to for affordable Art and collections. Maybe something like this Rolling Fields Art Print.

See Our tips here on How to Hang Art Like a Professional

See also my post here for more information on “Affordable Art For Your Home Online ”.

Or my post here for “Great Artists I have found on ETSY”.

8. Add Fire Screen to FP to finish it.

Let's add one more to the list and include a lovely fireplace screen with a large gilded frame. Or whatever frame fits your decor. This will add character to your heart and protect animals and if a natural fire, sparks from damaging your carpeting.

PS: if you like these pillows, they too are in the ETSY shop I listed above.

9. Place your faux tree in a basket or finished pot.

A finished or fluted planter or a wicker basket will improve the look of a faux tree. Add some Spanish moss around the base of the tree to fill the top. Serena + Lily, or Target, have great prices.

10. Organization is the key to success.

Remember there is a higher archy when placing accessories, the finishing touches to your space. Make one thing the main statement and allow some higher-archy for that one peices. then add a collection of objects that you have collected on your travels? When you honor that one thing that creates a statement in the room, it’s comfortable. It could be the rug, a collection of photography in one area. If you have too many things in a room, it can be too much visually. How you edit what you have on display is just as important as knowing what to add.
