Sleep Better Now: How Design and Energy Flow Can Influence Your Sleep

Sleep is essential for our health and survival, yet at times it can be fleeting. A good night's sleep can improve your ability to concentrate, be creative, and learn new skills. People who don't get enough rest often have a hard time paying attention and are more likely to commit errors at work or in school.

In this article, I will share some of my thoughts on how design and energy flow can influence your sleep. I will also share some tips on how to create a bedroom that is conducive to restful sleep.

The Importance of Design

The design of your bedroom can have a big impact on your sleep. A bedroom with soft colors, soothing textures, and a serene aesthetic supports the best sleep. I usually recommend you consider your bedroom first, not last when designing your home.

The Importance of Energy Flow

In feng shui, the flow of energy is believed to be essential for good health and well-being. The bedroom is a particularly important room for feng shui, as it is the place where we rest and recharge.

There are a few things you can do to improve the energy flow in your bedroom:

7 Steps to a Feng Shui Bedroom

When it comes to Feng Shui in the bedroom, you should arrange the space to support your best rest, connection with your partner, and with yourself. The ambiance of the bedroom should be inviting, exciting and calming all tied into one. Whether you’re going to be in the room for an afternoon nap, a good night’s sleep or for a round of mad passionate lovemaking, you should get the feeling that the room is pleasurable and fun to be in. A place of calm.

1. Fresh air.

If you can’t have your windows open all the time or live in an area where if they were open you would be inhaling pollutants, invest in an air purifier. Fresh air is important in good Feng Shui energy.

Note: You should not use any type of plant or flower in your bedroom especially if it’s a small room. If you do choose to use them, just make sure they are as far away from your bed as possible.

2. No electronics or exercise equipment.

At some point in time (maybe even right this very minute) you’ve probably had a TV, computer or some piece of exercise equipment in your bedroom. Meaning you know how distracting it is and easy to get lured into checking email one more time or watching the latest Netflix movie of 1 more episode of Schitt’s Creek.

The logic behind not having a computer in the bedroom is that it’s often associated with work and your bed is associated with rest. Work and rest are opposite of each other so when it comes to Feng Shui, the energy of these two is incompatible.

Having these distractions in your room is the quickest way to destroy Feng Shui energy. So get rid of them…now! Darkness, like nighttime, is a natural indicator for the body to start preparing for sleep. All the electronics are disrupting this natural process.

3. Lighting.

Your mood in the bedroom can be affected (either negatively or positively) by the lighting. Lighting can influences sleep. With just a flick of the switch, our room can improve our activities and sleep. Good interior lighting sources and colors, curtains, and sometimes blackout blinds all are crucial elements for your bedroom.

In my family, I have teenagers studying for school and wake into midnight hours trying to create or study. I also have my mother, who at 78, has dementia induce anxiety at night, and I need to create a peaceful quiet space for her to approach sleep.

LED lighting is typically a bright white light that keeps us alert, also suppresses melatonin ( required for sleep).

Incandescent is still my preference for want of warm lighting that is similar in color and warmth of sunlight.

Yet the advancement of energy-efficient LED that is evolving, sometimes in conflict options for lighting are getting better with the new wave of SMART BULBS. Choose the right bulbs and place them in the right locations. Make sure you think about what you see when lying down, and when dressing every morning. Consider placement from a variety of viewpoints.

Choosing bulbs that can change in the evening to assist your circadian rhythm is also an evolving and welcomed option aka Biological Bulbs: With a few bulbs, I transformed the bedrooms in my home into warm, cozy cocoons of yellow glowing light and supporting our subconscious mind to ready for sleep.

4. The position of your bed.

Make sure that you can get in and out of your bed from both sides. Place a nightstand on either side of the bed. And make sure it is not in the direct line of the doorway.

Place the bed diagonally across from the door, against a solid wall, with equal space on either side

5. Mirrors.

If you are going to have mirrors in your bedroom make sure they aren’t near the bed where you can see your face and upper body in the reflection.

6. Clutter/ Space Planning.

We discussed as having a TV, computer, or exercise equipment in your bedroom as a distraction, but so is clutter. Clutter can lead to feelings of anxiousness and chaos which are feelings that make it more difficult to fall asleep.

Review your furniture layout as well as storage options to keep things neat, picked up, and put away. “It’s important to clear out anything under your bed, behind a door, etc because these areas get stale and can harbor negative energy.”  Kon Marie

I know, life gets in the way. We are always scheduled to the minute, that’s human nature. Did you know that moving just 25 items in your home can change the way you feel in your space? yes. The cosmic idea is that you are changing the energy flow, the CHI. So, tackle that pile on the chair, the stuff under the bed, and clear the clutter. You will feel the difference.

7. At Night, Keep All the Bedroom Doors Closed.

Make sure that every night you close any doors in your bedroom. That means closet doors, a bathroom door, and the bedroom door.

What one person has in mind for their perfect Feng Shui bedroom doesn’t mean another person is going to envision the same thing. However, every Feng Shui bedroom will have one thing in common and that’s the inviting, exciting, and calming atmosphere it should give off.

Why spend money and time on my bedroom, nobody will ever see it? The main reason for creating a restful, and renewing bedroom is that it is essential for supporting your sleep and well-being. We all know that proper sleep is essential for our brains, yet so many of us suffer from a good night’s rest ( me included at times ). A lack of sleep can interfere with memory, mood and depression, and chronic illnesses.

Creating the best environment possible for success is foundational when organizing and planning your bedroom for optimal results.

Detox Your Bed With Organic Basics

A good night's sleep is essential for our health and well-being. But did you know that the bedding you use can also have a big impact on your sleep? Even if you dropped a grand or more to buy one of the best mattresses out there, your sleep is also influenced by other factors, like the sheets you use.

That's why I'm a big fan of organic bedding. Organic bedding is made from natural materials that are free of chemicals and toxins. This means that it's better for your health and it can also help you sleep better.

LINEN: There are many different types of organic bedding available, so you can find the perfect set for your needs. I prefer linen bedding. Linen is a natural fiber that is very breathable and absorbent. It's also naturally hypoallergenic, so it's a great choice for people with allergies. One look at The Positano Linen Shop on the Serena + Lily website, and you’ll be inspired to open the windows to let in the fresh air, and sleep comfortably, despite temperature changes that occur during the night.

BAMBOO: Another great option is bamboo bedding. Bamboo is a sustainable material that is also very soft and comfortable. It's also naturally antimicrobial, which can help to keep your bedding clean and free of bacteria.

No matter what type of organic bedding you choose, you're sure to get a better night's sleep. So why not give it a try? Your body and your sleep will thank you!

Here are some of the benefits of organic bedding:

  • It's better for your health. Organic bedding is made from natural materials that are free of chemicals and toxins. This means that it's better for your skin and your respiratory system.

  • It can help you sleep better. Organic bedding is more breathable and absorbent than conventional bedding. This means that it can help you stay cool and comfortable at night, which can lead to better sleep.

  • It's more sustainable. Organic bedding is made from sustainable materials that are grown without the use of pesticides or herbicides. This means that it's better for the environment.

Here are some of my favorite brands of organic bedding:

I hope this helps you find the perfect set of organic bedding for your needs!

Detox Your Bed With Organic Basics. I’m going to add one more bonus tip……. beautiful organic bedding. There are only 3 types of bedding that I will purchase.

Organic Materials: Flax, Linen, Cotton, and for some, silk.

My fave is Linen. It’s a completely natural material. Linen is made from very fine fibers derived from the flax plant. The fibers are spun into yarn and woven into long sheets of seriously comfortable fabric. Choose a Linen that is responsibly sourced. Certified organic and natural linen is antimicrobial, and natural flaxseeds as much as 60 percent less water to grow than cotton

I have developed a preference for organic linen sheets personally, especially in the summer, since it’s comfortable for sleeping, a healthy natural product, and very durable.

Bamboo: Bamboo sheets are popular for their silky softness, breathability, and lightweight feel.

Choose Responsibly-Sourced Down: Choose a US supplier that is audited against strict animal welfare and safety. Once I learned how down was harvested ( in some countries, it is taken from the animal while the goose is alive!) I never purchased down again. Now there is tracking in the US for certified humane farming.

Organic Mattress Pad: Build a good foundation with natural non-toxic materials, and don’t forget your pad!

Choose Pillows with organic inserts that are next to your face, and breathe all night long. : the foundation of your Sleep, Check the ingredients and make sure it is a cotton cover.

Even on Amazon, there are 100% Organic Cotton Batting/Stuffing pillows,  bamboo mattress toppers, and mattresses.
